Your analysis of the magazine cover, contents and double page spread is thorough, well done. It's possibly significant that NME have used a white font on their cover as part of a 'special edition' - it's a slight deviation form their usual colour scheme / style and the special edition is probably the reason why.
Yes Becca, it is a good font for some of the reasons you've suggested but could be quite difficult to read.
