Fresh faced new artist Charlz has a very strong, blunt opinion
on the British charts. She wants to turn
it around. Despite only being 17 years
old she has made a large impact in the indie rock world and has the high hopes
for breaking into the charts. Despite not being signed onto any well-known
label, she has come out of nowhere to create sterling artwork on her debut
album. She is living proof that you do not need to be signed onto a mainstream label
to become successful. Here she discusses her incentive behind the album and
bluntly shares her strong opinion on today’s charts…
Hey Charlz. Thanks
for making it here today.
Hello, it’s a pleasure to be here, I've read this magazine
since it first came out! I love the originality of the artists featured in
here.
Thank you. Congratulations
on the success of your debut album, Reinforce.
How does it feel to be an indie success?
Cheers, I really wasn’t expecting this. At all. It’s insane.
I really didn’t think that people would appreciate the change in genre. An
indie rock album ACTUALLY getting into the charts. I’m shocked!
How are you finding
chart success?
It’s amazing! Going from studying A levels in college to
becoming a well-known artist in a matter of days! It’s such a shock but I love
it. I’m so not used to people caring about my song writing. I mean it makes me
feel like I have accomplished something and made a positive impact on my fans *laughs*
So what was the
incentive of this album?
I wanted to combine my two favourite genres of music, indie
and rock in order to create an indie rock sound that I love so much. I feel
that the lyrics are powerful to relate to issues such as love, bullying,
rejection in order to make people feel better about themselves, that there is a
way past this. I have been through bullying myself and it’s a horrible ordeal.
Also, I have covered the happy aspect of life in order to give a balance for my
fans. This is all for them.
We love your music. What
impact do you want your music to have on the charts then?
Aw thanks *giggles*. And i want my music to bring
originality back to the charts, and to make the British charts British again. In
my opinion the UK charts have been taken over by American music. There seems to
be more American than British music nowadays in our charts. Most of my friends
don’t even like half the music in the charts. We need way more British music in
our current charts and maybe chart music may be more appreciated and original
and less commercialised and using stuff like auto tune.
Couldn’t agree more.
So your voice is all natural in your songs then?
Yeah. None of that auto tune stuff. It ruins many original voices
by making them sound commercialised. Natural voices are better people! It brings
more diversity to music than just noise!
Finally, where do you
hope to see yourself in 10 years?
A legend! Haha! Yeah on a more realistic note I hope to have
done charity singles and to have used my music to help other people feel like
they are worth something, maybe done a tour as well! I want to help other as
well as make music for the fun of it even though it’s what I love to do.
Thanks again for
coming.
It’s been an honour, thanks for having me.
